Collection: Summery Copenhagen
For CECILIE copenhagen, it all started with a night out, with nothing to wear. A familiar situation sparked the idea that is now CECILIE copenhagen. Made from two keffiyeh scarves sewn together, 18-year-old Cecilie created an outfit. After countless compliments that night, Cecilie decided to experiment with other garments, inspired by the keffiyeh print. A characteristic keffiyeh print and new silhouettes became our well-known pieces, Shirt-O & Shirt-V + shorts. CECILIE copenhagen was established shortly after.
The characteristic keffiyeh scarf is a combination of 3 patterns, each symbolizing different aspects from the region. The olive leaves (the zig zag pattern) represent strength, resilience and perseverance. The fishnet pattern represents affinity towards the sailors and the connection with the Mediterranean Sea. The bold stripe pattern represents trade routes, symbolizing a long history of merchants, travel and cultural exchange.
The Keffiyeh scarf has a fascinating history dating back to Sumerians and Babylonians in Mesopotamia. It is also known as a shemagh scarf, Arab scarf, Palestinian hatta, yamegh and igal. Wearing the shemagh has held many different meanings and uses over time, also depending on location and culture. The symbolic meaning, color, and keffiyeh style vary from one country to another and even from one region to another.
CECILIE copenhagen acknowledges the Keffiyeh’s origins in the Middle East, and that the scarf’s pattern holds cultural value for many people of the region. CECILIE copenhagen admires the beauty of the keffiyeh print, so much that we have created designs inspired by the historic pattern in various combinations. CECILIE copenhagen draws inspiration from the thought of timeless prints, light weight fabrics, combined with a Scandinavian design tradition for easy wear styles.
We are instinctively thinking of new combinations, incorporating the light weight, woven texture. For our pre SS21 collection, we have created our classic “dress 2” in a dogtooth pattern version and our classic shorts, now featuring yin yang symbols, both in the floaty, cotton fabric that we love. We aim to create classic items of good quality, that will remain in wardrobes for many years.
