The Black Blazer

The Black Blazer.

The one trusty item in your wardrobe that you can always rely on. Kind of like your Mum, kind of like the best friend you call when you need some advice. She's reliable, she'll always be in your life (albeit, sometimes more times than others), and you'll certainly always love her no matter what life throws at the two of you. Introducing; The Black Blazer.

You might be thinking, "well hey, I don't work in a bank, I'm not in a corporate role, and I'm certainly not a Real Estate agent (although you might be - and good on you, we hope you love what you do!). So why then do I need a blazer?" Well, welcome to '101 Reasons Why You Need a Black Blazer'. No, really, don't worry, I won't put you through that, but I do want to highlight the versatility of a Black Blazer and just how much you can do with it when it comes to styling it with different pieces in your wardrobe, and making it appropriate for any occasion (or 'not occasion'. The supermarket still counts as an outing worthy of getting dressed up for).

I have a few black blazers. A Linen Blazer, a Wool blend blazer, and an Oversized Boxy blazer.

- One linen one for warmer days when I don't need any extra warmth, or want to have something on had that I can thrown on should it cool off. Linen has a way of looking more casual doesn't it? Maybe it's the natural wrinkles that develop with wear, or maybe it's the we associate wearing linen with warmer days outside in the sun, rather than special swanky events. Either way, a linen blazer makes for a really great Summer dressing piece + a layer for more casual outings.

How We Style It: Over a plain tee with denim and sneakers OR over a sun dress with the sleeves rolled up + some sandals. Don't forget your sunnies and hat!

- One wool blazer for those cooler days, and nights out that may require more than what your anticipated 'alcohol blanket' might provide. Now, I want you to get the image of a big fluffy chunky woollen tweed blazer out of your head. Wool products can be super fine and thin. So fine that they, in fact, they almost look like  they couldn't possibly be wool. They don't need to be bulky, and they definitely don't need to be overly texturious. However, if you're wanting to add some interest to your outfit, or maybe you're going to be wearing a black dress/base garment, and thus choosing a blazer that has some texture to it will create more visible differentiation between the various black pieces that have become your outfit.

How we style it: Over a special event dress, with black heels and a black chain strap bag to create some cohesion between your outfit OR with a beautiful feature blouse or sexy black top and some black pants.

- One oversized/boxy/boyfriend blazer. I get it, it's not for everyone. However, if it is then, read on dear friend. But also, If it's not, then do read on, because you might just find that you become a fan of the oversized blazer once you try one out for yourself. You just don't know until you try. And remember, you can try before you buy - Pop in to one of our stores for a bit of a play. It's just like raiding Mum's dress up box, except this time around you'll be doing it with a glass of Champagne in hand and one of our knowledgeable stylists in the wings.

The oversized blazer has so much potential, yet only few ever get to discover it. Don't be scared. It doesn't have to swamp you, or make you feel like you're living back in the 80's. In fact, there has been a real resurgence of 80's office style dressing in the past year or two. Tailoring is very much a look we love. Shoulder pads will give you elevation, and can help balance out an outfit that might otherwise be bottom heavy - for example, if you're wearing quite wide leg pants, a voluminous skirt, or tiered dress.

Alternatively, you could also let the blazer be the star of the show and pair it with some skinny jeans/firm fitting pants and a firm tee or tank. She looks beautiful with a knit or a hoodie underneath too if you're wanting a more 'sporty luxe' or casual look.

How we style it: With other classic tailored pieces like a waistcoat and pleated pants OR with a hoodie and long straight leg pants with a chunky black loafer.

The Blazer, A firm favourite amongst the Hyde team. The piece we you need in your bag for any trip away, because you know she will go with everything else in that overpacked bag (yip, we know; every time you go away somewhere you remind yourself that you want to become a minimalist packer, but let's get real with ourselves here, we like clothes too much for that, and we need options).
