To extend the life of this garment, we recommend cold delicate handwashing then air drying. A cold delicate machine wash is also recommended. Avoid washing detergent that has optical whiteners and brighteners. To iron out wrinkles, we recommend steaming, not pressing. This garment can also be dry cleaned.

How warm is it – suitable for winter, or best for layering in cooler months?

A classic high-waisted, straight-leg trouser in satin back crepe — a smooth, fluid suiting fabric with drape rather than insulation. It's a year-round workwear piece: comfortable in mild weather and easy to carry through winter with knitwear on top and a coat over it. The full-length straight leg gives more coverage than a cropped style.

What are the garment measurements for each size (6–16)?

Available in sizes 4–24, and also offered in Petite and Tall. Fits true to size. Sizes 16–24 have elastic in the back waistband for a better fit. Inseam lengths are 81.7cm for sizes 4–10, 82cm for sizes 12–18 and 82.5cm for sizes 20–24, with a 3cm hem turn-up that can be let down if you need extra length. RUBY publishes a body measurement chart rather than flat garment measurements — a size 8 corresponds to 86cm bust, 70cm waist and 98cm hip, grading up from there.

Is it machine washable or dry clean only?

Machine washable — cold hand wash or delicate machine cycle with similar colours. It can also be dry-cleaned. Do not soak, bleach or leave damp. Hang to dry in the shade, and use a cool iron on the reverse if needed.

RUBY is a New Zealand label, and the Firebird Pant is made locally in Glen Eden, Auckland. The fabric is woven and dyed in Fukui, Japan, from NAIA™ cellulosic fibre spun in Tennessee and polyester spun in Toyama. RUBY tags the style as Made in Aotearoa, Zero Production Waste and Responsibly Sourced Wood Fibre.

What is NAIA™ acetate, and how does it wear?

NAIA™ is a cellulosic fibre made from wood pulp sourced from certified and controlled forests, and it makes up 78% of this fabric alongside 22% polyester. It gives the satin back crepe its fluid drape and subtle sheen while resisting creasing better than a pure cellulosic — which is what makes the Firebird hold a sharp line through a working day. It's also why the trouser is washable at home rather than dry-clean only.
