The knit tank has quietly become the most-worn top in a lot of our customers' wardrobes, so we gave it its own edit. Everything here sits at the $99 mark, and we add to it whenever a style comes through that holds up to daily wear.

What a knit tank does best

A knit tank holds its shape. It sits away from the body rather than following it, which keeps a clean line at the shoulder and armhole and reads as considered rather than casual. That is why it has become the layering piece of choice: finished enough to wear on its own, fine enough not to add bulk under a blazer.

It is a different job from the cotton jersey tank you already live in. Jersey is soft, cool and made for a hot Saturday. A knit tank is the one that gets you through a meeting or out to dinner, without a change of top. Most of our customers own both, and the two do not compete for the same spot in a wardrobe.

The cut is what you are paying attention to

The styles we stock here are cut relaxed through the body with a straight, sleeveless shape. That matters more than it sounds. A relaxed knit tank skims instead of gripping, so it works across a wider range of sizes and body shapes than a fitted rib tank does, and it stays comfortable through a full day rather than the first two hours of one.

Look for the armhole and the shoulder line. A knit tank that sits too wide at the arm stops working under a jacket, and that is the job most of these tops are bought to do.

How many ways it wears

Four, in the order our customers actually use them:

• Under a blazer, with tailored pants or straight denim. The knit texture stops the outfit from reading like a uniform, and it takes you from desk to dinner without changing your top.
• On its own with jeans through summer. A gold chain and a leather bag finish it.
• Layered over a fine shirt, sleeves and collar out for the shoulder seasons when a jacket is too much, and a tank alone isn't enough.
• With a midi skirt when you want the outfit to look put together without looking like you tried.
